Advanced Competencies in Perioperative Nursing: Critical Analysis and Pathways to Enhancement

Objective: To critically analyse the role of advanced competencies in perioperative nursing and to reflect on possible pathways for their recognition and enhancement in the Portuguese healthcare context. Methodology: Theoretical reflection based on a narrative review of national and international scientific literature, with a particular focus on clinical, organisational and governance practices involving nursing roles within the operating theatre. Results: The literature highlights the positive impact of perioperative nurses with advanced competencies on surgical flow efficiency, patient safety, and resource optimisation. However, major institutional gaps persist regarding the formal recognition and valorisation of this professional profile, particularly in Portugal. Conclusion: The enhancement of advanced perioperative nursing competencies requires an integrated approach that includes normative recognition, access to specialised training, involvement in decision-making processes, and investment in shared clinical governance.
