This article contextualizes the evolution and historical trajectory of the concept of sustainable development and its implementation in Brazilian legislation, synthesizing the dialogue between the influence of international law on the national environmental legal system through the phenomenon of soft law. This work initially traces the origin of the term "sustainable development" and introduces the chronology of its discussion and application in international debates. Subsequently, the concept of soft law is woven and contextualized to establish the intersectionality between Brazilian environmental law and the international treaties, conventions, and instruments that dictate the implementation of sustainable development globally. In this way, Brazil is highlighted as a global leader in sustainable development, both in relation to its solid legislation and its role as a host of key international discussions on the subject, without neglecting the contemporary challenges still faced by the country in the implementation of environmental legislation and international commitments.
