Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by hyperglycemia, caused by defects in insulin secretion, action, or both. When chronic, hyperglycemia can lead to damage in organs such as the kidneys, eyes, nerves, and blood vessels. Affecting over 140 million people worldwide, it is one of the most common non-communicable diseases.
